Paperback Book Covers for Novels

My Life, My Misery by Jackey Mukhawana

Description

This is the story that started my project of editing and publishing books for South Africans.

Because the story was only five pages in length, it was too short for publication as a paperback so I added pages where a reader could write in descriptions of the scenes and that sort of thing to make the book about 28 pages.

This is a rags to riches story of an orphaned boy who is driven from his home village and ends up in a large city. Luckily, he has a good singing voice and he wins a competition that sets him on the way to fame and fortune. The text in the paperback edition includes sections where aspiring writers can elaborate on the story and aspiring artists can sketch some of the scenes described.

Thorns of a Rose by Sithabiso Sandra Ngwenya

Description

Thorns of a Rose is a gripping tale of the life of a teenage girl living in Africa who is sold to a rich, old landowner in payment of a debt. Thandolwethu, nicknamed “Thando”, is enjoying her life as a student in a private mission school in her village, but is finally persuaded to go to work for Abiyosa for a short period in order to pay off the family debt. When she arrives at the Abiyosa plantation, she finds out that she is to be the next wife for this old man.

The story is set in the 1990’s, providing a shocking dose of reality about the recent state of life in some parts of South Africa. The cruelty and terror felt by Thando in her new, hopeless life is mitigated by her falling in love with Abiyosa’s young nephew. Not a story for the faint of heart, Thorns of a Rose reveals a side of life not well understood by modern city-dwellers.

Living Out The Dream by Olive Caldwell Lee

Description

This story describes the life and times of two Irish families who decided to emigrate to Canada in the 1820’s. Written by a descendant, it brings together many historical documents, letters written by family members and others, and stories handed down over the years of the difficulties faced in the new world.

It begins with a brief summary of the situation in Ireland, explaining the conditions there. It describes the very difficult voyage across the Atlantic and the primitive state of Quebec, Montreal and Ottawa.

The effort required to reach their homestead, the community working together to clear the land and build log homes and the work of young men in the lumber camps all bring into focus the immense task they took on.

Towards the end of the 1820’s, the construction of the Rideau Canal, led by Colonel By, provided work for many of the men.

Olive Caldwell Lee lives in the lower mainland of British Columbia. She was raised on a farm in Fallowfield, close to the original homesteads of the Caldwells and Argues, the families whose lives are described in the book.

Caught in the Storm by Somisa Perpetual Hlangwana

Description

Somi thought of writing a novel and came up with Caught in the Storm, her first book. Somi felt that she could be a great writer only if she could base her writing on her own experience. She talked her Dad into getting her a tutor and then seduced the poor fellow just so she could know what true love is all about. Needless to say, Dad was not amused when he found that one of his daughters was pregnant.

Editor's note. Only after he agreed to publish this true life story of teenage life and love did Somi reveal that it was all in her imagination. She now claims virginal status, says that the tutor, although an ideal mate, does not exist. It's all “Fake News” to quote the current explanation for lies and deceit. This little liar is working on the sequel where I suppose she'll give birth to quintuplets each of whom will require a medical miracle to survive. If you want to know more about her, look for Somi Novelist on Facebook.

Somi thinks women deserve special treatment and not only in ordinary relationships but also in marriage. Somi's story involves lot of worrisome things such as teenage pregnancy, the importance of education, how to take care of your loved ones, being disappointed or betrayed by those you love, true friendship, decisions in life, but mostly "love".

The Case of the Intrepid Investigator by William Jenkins V

Description

William Jenkins is the world famous author of the eight stories in "The Case of ..." series of mystery-adventures written about the Private Investigators Club. These stories describe the mystery-solving activities of four middle school kids in Brockville, Ontario, using titles such as "The Case of the Ancient American", "The Case of the Brainy Birds", and "The Case of the Cannabis Cat" etc. They are now collected in one hard cover book titled "Brockville Mysteries and Adventures".

In this ninth "Case of" story, Mr. Jenkins moves to Linden (a fictional city whose name is chosen to protect the innocent) and is mired in an intriguing situation involving spies, a beautiful South African lady, and a large conglomerate which is being used by C.S.I.S. without their knowledge or consent. The story reveals the use of Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and speech-to-text systems that are revolutionizing the way corporations and intelligence departments of the government are attempting to control our lives.

Jenkins is staying at the Bayshore Inn while he searches for a suitable place to live in his new city. One night, while finishing his dinner in the Bayshore restaurant, he is approached by a beautiful female stranger who, uninvited, seats herself at his table and says "Pretend I'm with you." It is an intriguing beginning to his ninth adventure.

As the covid-19 pandemic rages across the USA and the antics of the defeated former President of the United States occur, Jenkins uses his investigative skills to follow up on the reports of missing people, and the puzzling activities of the beautiful lady he has met by chance in the Bayshore hotel restaurant.

The story describes the many leads and false trails that Jenkins follows as he works his way towards an understanding of this complex tale of analysis, reflection, conclusion and success.  Originally published in paperback and electronic form including the first chapter of the sequel, this edition now includes the complete sequel. Being published in hard cover makes it a suitable addition to any thoughtful person's library.

Brockville Mysteries and Adventures by William Jenkins V

Description

This book consists of eight stories about four middle school kids in Brockville, Ontario who set up a Private Investigator’s Club to solve mysteries after listening to a Career Day presentation by a local police detective.
Ten-year-old Mary Cashman is nicknamed ‘Brains’ because she is a smart student with a variety of interests. She is President of the club for the first three adventures. Bobby is the more mature member, invited to join the club because of his brawn. Dick is the entrepreneur, running a lawn mowing business, and Tommy, the nephew of the police detective, is a questioning lad, always wanting to know what the difficult words mean.
The club follows Robert’s Rules of Order to run their meetings. The eight stories are presented in chronological and alphabetical order.
The Case of the Ancient American Bobby incessantly bullies the others, throwing stones at them, pushing Tommy into the St. Lawrence River and other unfriendly acts. The kids meet an ancient American who has retired to Brockville and are fascinated by his stories. Bobby joins the club and stops bullying.
The Case of the Brainy Birds The four young detectives pick a name for their new club. Dick suggests that they solve the problem of the missing birds. He has noticed that all the seagulls that normally float over Brockville and the nearby St. Lawrence River are gone. That afternoon after school they set out to find the birds. A strong earthquake strikes …
The Case of the Cannabis Cat The Frayne family at the dinner table discusses the legalities of arresting a person. Tommy knows the Miranda warning, but his Dad points out that the laws are different in Canada. The next day, a box is delivered to the Frayne home addressed to Tommy. When he opens it, he finds a little cat with a small barrel tied to a ribbon around its neck. A policeman arrives at their door and accuses them of drug dealing.
The Case of the Diligent Detectives Bobby wants the young detectives to become more diligent in their investigations. He overrules various suggestions for investigation and chooses investigating the brown blotches that are appearing on the grass. He suspects that alien spacecraft are hovering over the city at night and shining powerful laser beams at the ground.
The Case of the Electrified Envoy Bobby urges the detectives to be more professional. He wants to find someone whom they can follow as a suspect. They choose an older man who has just moved to Brockville. Dick acts as scout and reports when the man leaves his apartment. Mary scoots over to the supermarket to observe him. Before long, all four of the young detectives have the suspect under control. The story involves cosmology, parallel universes and science.
The Case of the Forgotten Fort Bobby suggests that they try to find out what the City of Brockville is hiding in the closed and locked railway tunnel under the city. They go exploring, break into the tunnel and find many items that they conclude the Department of Public Works is storing there. Mary gets caught as she leaves the tunnel and is forced to seal the others inside.
The Case of the Greedy Goat Tommy reports that he has received an invitation for the club members to have a holiday at Mr. J’s cottage in return for helping him open it for the summer. With some difficulty he leads them through the formal procedures to accept the invitation. They are driven to Chaffey’s Lock and taken by boat to a remote cottage on Scott Island. While working on the task of getting the water system working, their cell phones are eaten by the Greedy Goat.
The Case of the Hidden Hound Tommy sees an ad in the newspaper offering a reward for finding a missing dog. The PIC decides to take on this challenge, using the cover story that they are looking for business for Dick's Lawn Service. They get into trouble when some officials do what Bobby calls a "Bee Sting" trick on them. Luckily, their police officer club member, Tanya Patel, comes to their rescue.
