This is an anthology of plays, stories and poems written by high school students in Letaba, Limpopo, South Africa.
Jackey Mukhawana was the driving force, encouraging the others to contribute their writing.
Bekazi Mboweni who was in grade 9, was persuaded to submit her poem on Electricity.
Eustacia Nhlangweni and Alter Mathebula were a little older and submitted quite a few short stories and poems. We had the book printed in South Africa and Jackey arranged to have some copies placed on consignment on a bookstore.
Lukas Groenewald, the former Editor of the Letaba Herald, welcomed three of the contributors to An Anthology out of South Africa to his office and actually bought a copy of the book from each of them. Lukas very kindly permitted us to ship the books to his office. When the books arrived, he invited the authors to his newspaper office, had them interviewed by a reporter and put their photo in the paper along with a very supportive article. Needless to say, the authors were delighted.
The administration staff members at Hudson Ntsan'wisi Senior Secondary School in Tzaneen lauded the authors at a student meeting
Later Jackey thanked me for making him "A legend in his own time". Of course, he did it all; I just helped.
This book contains stories, plays and poems by Alter Mathebula, a secondary school student in Letaba, South Africa.
This is an example of her poetry:
You ruined my life.
You played my heart like a toy.
You made me a fool, so you embarrassed me.
Indeed you are a destroyer
I gave you everything.
You lied to me and made me go blind.
Okay, I was blinded by love.
You stole my heart and trust.
I am to trust no one anymore.
You are a perfect liar.
You took my virginity away.
You left me with a baby; then you ran away.
You said I was your first priority.
Now where are you to prove your point.
You have forsaken me in the middle of nowhere.
You turned around and showed your back.
I dropped out of school because of you.
I hate you now.
You made me feel worthless.
My love is now price-tagged, just because of you.
My reputation is ruined.
It's all about YOU, YOU, YOU!
Damn a boyfriend!
What is that?
Food?
NO!
A boyfriend is a destroyer and a perfect liar.
This book reports on the work of twenty-four aspiring writers living in South Africa who have enjoyed free editing and publishing services provided by me.
The writers are mostly young people although some are mature adults. Each author is introduced, and examples of the writing are included. A photo of each author and a brief biography are shown in the web pages under AUTHORS.
The purpose of the book is to provide a souvenir of the experience for the participants.
This book is dedicated to those who have submitted their writing to me with the courage to have it published.
